Glossary

Hollows: The state a soul takes after the hole in its chest is fully opened, thus the hole in a hollow's heart. They eat their family members in the mortal world, and then they eat the mortals and soul reapers with high soul power.
Examples: Acidwire (used to be Orihime's deceased brother) tried to kill and eat Orihime. Fishbone D (hollow from episode one) attacked Karin and Ichigo for their soul power.

Gigai: A temporary host where a soul reaper can inhabit. Staying in one can help them recover their powers slowly, and it allows mortals to see them.
Examples: After Rukia lost her powers, she inhabited a gigai and enrolled herself at Ichigo's school. At the school everyone was able to see her.

Kido: Magic that can only be casted by a soul reaper.
Examples: Rukia used a binding spell on Ichigo in the first episode.

Shinigami: Japanese for "god of death", but usually referred to as "soul reapers"
Examples: Everyone of the 13 Divisions.

Wholes: The good spirits who hang around the mortal world until they are sent to the Soul Society by a soul reaper if they had any regrets.
Examples: That ghost girl and the ghost man in episode one.
